| · Desktop Partitioning |
|
The safest data is always on a well-managed hard disk. The problem is that most desktop PCs in the business environment receive very little storage management attention until it's too late. The primary reason for this is the complexity of the task and not enough time for IT staffers to adequately and safely handle the time-consuming requirements to effectively manage workstation hard drives.
Symantec's solution is the industry's premier workstation hard drive management solution, providing IT professionals with the tools to quickly and easily manage workstation hard drives, allowing them to create, resize, merge and convert partitions, all without losing a single byte of business data.

|
| · Server Volume Management |
|
No matter how many network servers you have, managing Windows or NetWare server volumes can be a real challenge, especially when it comes to effective storage management. Yet there is no question that well-managed servers run longer with less data failure than ignoring them until they do fail - a sad state which happens all too frequently and typically proves to be very costly.
Symantec has volume management solutions for both Windows NT, 2000 and NetWare servers with powerful tool sets that allow you to dynamically reconfigure volume sets or partitions, copy, resize, move, merge or consolidate volumes/partitions on multiple storage devices. With these Symantec solutions you can rest assured that your server storage systems are running most efficiently.

IT
security is out of hand – too many security threats, too
many security products, too many devices, too
much at risk. Corporate Security Officers and
IT Security Managers tasked with determining how to effectively
spread finite budgets across seemingly infinite vulnerabilities
live knowing they can’t
cover all the bases.
- The Need for Integrated IT Security
The
world is crying out for integrated security,
but we haven’t
seen much offered that’s affordable, scalable and genuinely
effective. For the most part, corporate IT is
charged with picking an assortment of point solutions
and praying that it’s
good enough. As threats escalate and new threats
evolve the problem with this approach becomes
increasingly visible and its inherent weaknesses
leave an organisation more and more at risk.
Something needs to be done – indeed
a new approach is required.
- A Different Point for Integration
Security
integration has focused on keeping bad guys
(and their digital emissaries) out. To do this
has meant trying to plug every conceivable hole.
The problem is holes continue to emerge – new
software releases, new configurations, and
new mis-configurations. What if a viruses, Trojans,
worms, hacker utilities - indeed any unauthorized
software – simply
could never run? What if users, devices and program
are linked together so that there is central
control over who could use what device and
run what application?
This is the integrated thinking that is
behind SecureWave’s
security products. In concept, and in practice,
it means defining and establishing trusted executables
and trusted devices. And while its implementation
involves a good deal of sophisticated engineering,
the approach is fairly easy to understand.
Consider first the idea of trusted
executables. What is required is a “White List” of
what is allowed to run and who is allowed to
run what. Once a record of this is established
for every PC or server in the network, it is possible to prevent
anything else running unless and until it gets approval. A policy
that defaults to denying a program from running can be established.
SecureWave’s Sanctuary Application Control implements
such a white list and can implement such a policy
and, if desired, a security policy that is far
more sophisticated in determining what can run
and what cannot.
Consider what this means. If only valid authenticated
programs can run, then viruses, Trojans, worms, hackers
or invalid users of any kind, never get a foothold.
Sanctuary Application Control not only keeps a record of what
is allowed, but also takes a “fingerprint” (a
SHA-I hash signature to be precise) of every
executable that is allowed and only allows it
let it run if the fingerprint matches. This stops foreign executables
and any kind of corrupted executable in its tracks.

The Challenges of Email
Email has become such a mainstream form of communication that organisations of all sizes now consider email a mission critical application - they could not survive without it. With this dependence has come increased usage: IDC projects that the number of emails sent daily will increase from 31 billion in 2002, to 60 billion by 2004. Other research indicates that 60% of an organisation's intellectual property is contained within its email system. Most organisations do not have a strategy to capture, organise or leverage this knowledge. Executives know that if sensitive or top-secret documents are leaving the organisation, either intentionally or unintentionally, the company can be sued, confidential information can be leaked, or the organisation is at risk for major liability. These issues are compounded by the weaknesses of current email systems. These systems do not provide the ability for email messages to be managed effectively in the long-term, and trying to work around these weaknesses is expensive, time-consuming and risky. As a result, most of an organisation's key stakeholders are unable to meet their obligations:
- Risk Managers cannot be certain they keep all messages, nor are they able to find them easily in order to comply with legislative or discovery requirements.
Business Impact: Penalties can be imposed on companies who do not comply with legislative requirements, while the cost of compliance using existing systems can run into the millions of dollars. Companies need to not only prove an email was sent; in many cases they need to prove that an email messages was not sent.
- Knowledge Managers are unable to effectively manage the knowledge contained within email messages and attachments, and systems such as document management systems place onerous duties on users, resulting in non-compliance.
Business Impact: Organisations miss out on the valuable information contained within email messages, by not being able to find them, or when the information is deleted.
- IT Managers are struggling to find enough storage, the business-critical email server is continually strained by the volume of messages going through it, and it can take weeks to find a message someone has deleted and wants to retrieve.
Business Impact: IT Managers spend their valuable time trying to keep systems up and running, and purchasing additional storage space to hold new messages. Days can be consumed trying to restore deleted messages from back-up tapes.
- End users are constrained by limits on the size of the email messages they can keep, so they end up storing messages elsewhere, out of the view of the company, or simply delete them, potentially losing valuable corporate information.
Business Impact: Users spend hours each week managing email messages to remain within storage guidelines, while the business runs the risk of having valuable information deleted.
In short, the current email systems do not meet the needs of key stakeholders and their weaknesses expose the organisations that run them.
The Solution is Enterprise Message Management
Enterprise Message Management has been specifically designed to meet the needs of these key stakeholders, and transforms email into a corporate asset. Through innovative use of industry standard technology, Enterprise Message Management enables organisations to automatically capture, retrieve and analyse all email messages and attachments that are processed by the email system.
Enterprise Message Management ensures organisations are able to take maximum advantage of email by:
- Capturing all messages sent to or from an organisation, ensuring organisations can meet their compliance requirements, retaining knowledge contained with the email message and its attachments, and removing the burden placed on users -they no longer need to worry about managing emails.
- Protecting email messages in a tamper-proof store. Users are unable to modify email messages and attachments once in the Enterprise Message Management system, ensuring an accurate record of all content is maintained.
- Providing the ability to search across all messages and attachments. Managers, administrators and users can use a Google-like search to search across all messages and attachments to which they have access. Information can now be found within minutes, where in the past it would have taken hours to find.
- Storing only a single copy of all messages and attachments, in a centralised store, reducing the storage space required to store email messages. Compression technology reduces the size of this storage even further. The result: A reduction in storage costs and the costs associated with managing this storage. The email system can also run more effectively, as it does not need to store as many messages.
- Enabling users to access email through a refined user interface, which uses familiar concepts such as Google-type searches, and Microsoft Outlook-compatible folders, so that users can get up and running quickly, reducing training costs.
- Importing all messages. In addition to capturing messages that are processed after Enterprise Message Management has been installed, messages stored on backup tapes or within personal store (PST) files can be imported, ensuring a complete record.
- Working with any email system. In addition to Microsoft Exchange, Enterprise Message Management will work with most other mainstream email systems.
- Installing with minimal risk. No software needs to be installed on the production email server, or on the user's PC, reducing implementation and support costs.
- Using relational database technology to "open up" email to other business systems. Enterprise Message Management can be easily integrated with other systems; a customer relationship management application, for example, can now easily access all email messages sent to or from a customer.

Managing passwords
and electronic identities can be a complex and frustrating task
for end users. This results in compromised security and lost productivity
for enterprises. Protocom SecureLogin® Single Sign-On enables users
to login securely and quickly to all their applications, websites
and mainframe sessions with a single identity.
Enterprises wishing to solve identity and access management issues
and lower administration costs are discovering the benefits of integrating
single sign-on (SSO) and user provisioning solutions. This trend is being
driven by enterprises moving to consolidate their user identity and access
management systems across the enterprise. When combined, SSO and user
provisioning solutions reduce password administration costs, enhance network
security and improve employee productivity across the network; at the
front end SSO enforces strict password policy and securely manages user
credentials for authorized application access, while at the back end user
provisioning centrally creates, administers and manages accounts for these
applications.
SSO is an emerging component of identity and access management. These
solutions enforce strict password policy and assist users meet this policy
by managing credentials on their behalf. SSO works by storing user credentials
in the enterprise directory and implementing the credentials when an application
is launched. Many enterprises choose to deploy SSO because it eliminates
the issues synonymous with users managing their own credentials, such
as lost, forgotten, shared or weak passwords; the user simply needs to
authenticate at the network login to enjoy seamless, secure network access.
The cost and efficiency benefits provided by SSO can be extended to
the back-end by integrating the SSO solution with user provisioning. User
provisioning enables enterprises to create, maintain, modify and delete
user accounts across a number of systems with only one event. A user’s
account is created once in an authoritative database and then predefined
rules determine the creation, modification or deletion of the user’s
various accounts.
SSO and user provisioning are ideal identity and access management
companion products. Consider the process of configuring a new user at
an enterprise. In the absence of SSO and user provisioning, the enterprise’s
administrator must manually create and administer a user’s various
accounts, for instance email, finance, personnel, and records management.
The user is then charged with remembering the various account credentials
to gain access to these applications.
Now, consider the same enterprise with SSO and user provisioning. The
administrator simply creates the user’s primary account in a central
database, and the required accounts are automatically provisioned.
SSO then captures these account credentials and manages the user’s
application access for them. Enterprises plagued by the high administration
costs associated with managing numerous system accounts, as well
as user credentials, could benefit from integrating SSO and user
provisioning. This is especially pertinent given the use of Internet
and corporate systems are set to increase as enterprise reliance
on business-to-business, customer-to-business and employee-to-business
transaction grows.
Single Sign-On Benefits
Ensure the integrity of your enterprise network security with the

to access the system and authenticate to all their applications;
no need to write down or unsafely store passwords. Your corporate
security password policy can quickly and easily be enforced for
all your system, application and website logins.
Faster
and Easier System Logins
Logging
in is faster and easier for users. After initial login, SecureLogin
Single Sign-On handles all other system, application and website
logins. Users are automatically authenticated to their applications,
giving them instant access without having to recall and enter passwords.

By
eliminating the need for users to manage their own passwords,
SecureLogin Single Sign-On effectively reduces the number of password
reset calls to the Help desk. IT-support professionals and administrators
will spend less time dealing with password related calls and can
redirect their attention back to their core duties.
Centralised
Administration
Powerful
centralised administration can be performed from a workstation
or server using the Protocom Administration Management Utility
or a SecureLogin Single Sign-On administration snap-in for Active Directory.
Administrators
have full control over users' SecureLogin interface settings
allowing them to easily specify which preferences a user can view
and/or edit; whether they can run the script wizards; and whether
details of sso-enabled applications can be viewed.
Legislative
Compliance for e-business
SecureLogin
Single Sign-On assists enterprises overcome the challenges
of complying with e-business legislation, such as the Sarbanes
Oxley, HIPAA, by enforcing corporate security policy and restricting

of regulatory requirements.
Rapid
return on investment
SecureLogin
Single Sign-On integrates seamlessly in an enterprise’s existing
infrastructure, providing the recognised benefits of single
sign-on without additional hardware or set-up costs.
Centralised
distribution and management provide fast and efficient deployment as
well as simplified user account management, resulting in savings that
enable enterprises to quickly recover the cost of their software investment.

Sanctuary Device Control
Hardware such as memory sticks, scanners, music players (for example, mp3 players and iPods), digital cameras, PDAs, and CD and DVD drives are scattered throughout offices around the world. Their proliferation amplifies the threats posed by outsiders or users who plug in devices that could compromise the security of sensitive corporate data. Here, too, Sanctuary does what you want it to do - it precludes the use of all devices that haven't been authorized.
Sanctuary Device Control stops security breaches before they can even start. With Sanctuary, all users are denied access by default. You simply authorize access to only the devices that the user needs. No one can plug into your network without approval. No one. Control is absolute. Sanctuary also audits I/O device use as well as attempts to use unauthorized devices.
Keep an Eye on Things
Know the adage "knowledge is power?" Sanctuary proves how true this is by providing a comprehensive audit log of every event whether allowed or attempted - including those by unauthorized code and all writes to removable media and specific ports. As an option, a full copy of the data written to a device can be captured and retained through our proprietary "shadowing"(tm) technology. Not only is an audit log invaluable in measuring and enforcing policy compliance, it also bundles the information you need as proof of compliance with a number of governmental regulations.
Sanctuary controls access to devices by applying a device Access Control List (ACL) to users, user groups and even specific computers. Device access for all users including administrators is not allowed by default. To grant access, you only need to associate those users or user groups to the devices to which they should have access.
Manage Devices per Type
Sanctuary controls the use of a huge range of devices that are key sources of security breaches. They are managed according to their type, not on how they are connected. Build it to Scale
For any security tool to be truly effective it needs to do what you want it to do, without hassles. That's what you get with Sanctuary. It lets you establish a policy of what is allowed either en masse or user by user, and it also lets you change user rights in a flash without needing to reboot the computer. Equally key, Sanctuary works for everyone everywhere, from remote laptop users and home workers to geographically dispersed networks. In fact, Sanctuary has been designed specifically for large, highly complex networks. Its three-tier architecture and loadbalancing capability already supports companies ranging in size from 50 to 50,000 seats. It integrates with the existing technical infrastructure and logical organization by mapping permissions to an existing Active Directory domain.
